There are table tops that look nice… and then there are table tops that make people stop and ask:
“Wait — what is that?”
That’s edge-grain plywood.
It’s real timber, but with a totally different look: a calm, contemporary pattern created by layered strata of wood running right through the surface. Warm like wood, but more architectural — almost like a natural textile.
We’ve focused on edge-grain since lockdown, and over time we’ve dropped everything else to specialise in it. Because once you see what it can do, it’s hard to go back.

Edge-Grain Birch - Close up of the pale strata pattern
At a glance (the quick version)
- What it is: real timber plywood where the layered strata become the visible surface
- The look: a calm, contemporary “new grain” pattern — warm, modern, and distinctive
- Stability: once made properly and dried, it’s highly stable with minimal movement vs many solid wood tops
- Sizes: plywood sheets are typically 240cm or 300cm — so we can build up to 300cm without joins (joins are optional if you want bigger)
- Your choice of ply: Birch (pale, hard, Scandi), Poplar (creamier, lighter), Meranti/Marine (rich, dramatic, moisture resilient)
- Finishes: Birch/Poplar get a colour-preserving water-based finish (minimum 6 coats); Meranti gets an oil finish to bring out depth
- Bespoke: any size to the millimetre, height adjustments, any leg colour, and flexible leg/base designs
- Beyond tables: desks, worktops, shelves, coffee tables, side tables — anything where edge-grain can be the feature
What edge-grain plywood actually is
Plywood starts life as thin layers of timber bonded together in alternating directions. That cross-layer build is what gives plywood its strength and stability.
Normally you see the “face” of plywood — the outer surface.
With edge-grain, we build the top so the strata (the layers) become the feature. Instead of hiding the construction, we celebrate it — and that’s what creates the distinctive pattern people fall in love with.
It isn’t printed. It isn’t artificial. It’s simply the real structure of the timber, made visible.
The part most people don’t realise: how it’s made matters massively
Edge-grain tops are unforgiving. If you bond them incorrectly, they can bow badly.
One of the biggest lessons we learned early on is this:
we don’t use clamps on our table tops.
It sounds counter-intuitive, but clamping can introduce stresses and encourage bowing in this kind of build. Our process is designed around keeping the top true, and a key part of that is allowing it to settle properly.
We also insist on patience:
once a top is made, we leave it to fully dry for around two weeks before sanding and finishing. That drying time is a vital part of achieving the stability we’re known for.
Sizes, joins, and grain direction (the practical bit)
How big can you go?
Plywood comes in sheets — typically 240cm or 300cm long. That means we can make a single-piece top up to 300cm without joins.
If someone wants larger than that, we can do it by joining sections — and some people actually like that detail. But by default:
we make our tops without joins unless you specifically ask otherwise.
Strips along the length… or across the width?
Most edge-grain tables are made with the strips running along the length of the table.
We do that — but we also build tops with strips running across the width. It creates a different feel, it can be a really good use of offcuts, and it’s a brilliant option when you want something a bit unexpected.
Choosing your ply: Birch, Poplar, or Meranti
We work with three core plywood types: Birch, Poplar, and Marine ply (often called Meranti, which better describes the timber).
We always use high-grade plywood because it has fewer internal voids and gives a cleaner, more beautiful finished edge. All plywood has some gaps — we fill them with a matching filler, and honestly it becomes part of the character rather than something to hide.
Birch ply
- High-quality, well-known ply
- Pale grey-beige tone
- Hard, stable, and the heaviest ply we use
- A natural fit for the Scandi look and lighter rooms

Poplar ply
- Lighter in weight than Birch
- A bit more likely to dent if something heavy is dropped on it
- Creamier tone than Birch, still very light
- Also brilliant for Scandi interiors and bright spaces

Edge-Grain Poplar - close-up of the creamy strata pattern
Meranti (Marine) ply
- Designed for marine environments: highly stable and moisture resilient
- Rich, reddy-brown colour
- When sanded and exposed, the edges are often the most dramatic of all
- Gorgeous in slightly darker, moodier, more romantic spaces
As a simple rule: Birch and Poplar love light rooms. Meranti loves atmosphere.

A quiet superpower: stability
Once made properly and allowed to dry, edge-grain plywood tops are hugely stable compared with traditional solid wood tops.
That doesn’t mean “indestructible” (it’s still timber), but the cross-layer structure means you generally see minimal movement compared with many plank tops — less shrink, less drama, and far less tendency toward cracking or splitting.
Finishes: keeping the colour true (or bringing it out)
Birch + Poplar finishes
To preserve the naturally light colour of Birch and Poplar, we use a water-based finish called Polyvine that has minimal effect on colour — sometimes it’s hard to see it’s there at all.
But it is — and we build resilience through layers:
we apply a minimum of six coats.
Meranti finish
With Meranti, we use an oil-based finish because it brings out the rich tones and depth in the best way. It makes the colour feel deeper and more special.
Day-to-day care
All of our tops are designed for real life:
- wipe with a damp cloth
- and like any timber surface, wipe spills away as soon as possible
Where edge-grain gets really mesmerising: curves, angles, and shape
Edge-grain is stunning in a rectangle… but it gets properly special when you introduce curves.
- A square or rectangle gives you a strong, structured look
- A round or oval creates a feathering effect through the strata that’s genuinely hypnotic
- And if you cut the edge at an angle, you reveal even more layered patterning
This is why we’d love to make more round tables — they’re underrated, they work brilliantly in certain spaces, and the edge detail is unreal.

Edge-grain first… then anything you want
We start with the edge-grain top — everything else follows.
What we’re about
We make bespoke tables with edge-grain plywood tops. We’ve got a small set of house styles you can choose from, made to your exact size and colour — but we’re not limited to that. If you’ve got a specific table shape, base style, or idea, we can build the edge-grain top and design the rest around you. And it’s not just tables: if it can be made with an edge-grain feature, we’re interested. Just get in touch — the possibilities are wide open.
Legs: endless options
We show a range of leg designs and we can make them in any colour you like. And beyond that, if you’ve got a different leg idea — we’ll happily build it.
Leg colour is a huge part of what makes these tables work in a room:
- match your walls for harmony
- go tonal for calm
- or contrast for impact
And it’s not just dining tables
If it’s a “top”, we can probably make it:
- desks
- coffee tables
- side tables
- console tables
- shelves and mantle pieces
- bench seats
- chest-of-drawers tops
- fitting an edge-grain top onto an antique base for that old/new contrast
There’s no real end to it — which is why edge-grain is the centre of what we do.
(We’re also keen camper-van people and we’d love to do a camper-van top — it’s on our wish list.)
People ask…
Here are the five questions we hear most:
1) Is the surface resilient?
Yes — it’s designed for everyday life, and finished for durability.
2) Can I have any size I want?
Yes. We build to the millimetre.
3) Can I change the height?
Yes — we’ll make it work for you.
4) Can you get it into my house?
Almost certainly — and we’ll check access with you first.
5) Can I choose absolutely any colour?
Yes — and we don’t charge extra for colour.
And one common misconception:
“This must be expensive.”
We keep pricing transparent. The price is based on the table size and top material, and you can see that clearly on our website — other choices don’t affect the price.
If you’ve got an idea, just get in touch
If you want an edge-grain piece — dining table, desk, shelves, a worktop, something completely different — message us.
Even if it’s half-formed, we’ll help you shape it.
Send:
- what you want to use it for
- approximate size
- a couple of photos of the space (mess is fine)
- and any style/colour thoughts
Then we’ll come back with a clear plan and what’s possible.
Because our rule is simple:
We’ll make almost anything… as long as it’s built around edge-grain plywood.
