Making a Bespoke Wooden Dining Table

A dining table is rarely just a piece of furniture. It’s where everyday life happens — meals shared, conversations stretched out, and moments that quietly become memories. For us, making a bespoke wooden dining table is about creating something that fits naturally into that rhythm of life, both practically and visually.

Here’s how a table moves from an initial idea to a finished piece, ready to take its place in a home.

From Idea to Sketch

Every table begins with a clear plan. Before any materials are cut, we work from a detailed sketch that sets out the proportions, dimensions and overall structure of the table. This sketch becomes the reference point throughout the build, helping ensure everything stays balanced and true to the original intent.

At this stage, key decisions are locked in — the leg style that defines the design, the overall size and shape, and how the table needs to work within the space it’s being made for.

Building the Edge-Grain Tabletop

The tabletop is central to the character of the table, and our edge-grain plywood tops require a careful, methodical approach.

The process begins by cutting high-quality plywood into consistent strips, each precisely sized and straight. These strips are then bonded together, with close attention paid to alignment. Even small inaccuracies at this stage would affect the finished surface, so patience matters.

Once bonded, the tabletop is left to cure for several days, allowing the structure to settle and stabilise before any further work begins.

Filling and Sanding

Raw plywood has natural variations, and preparing it properly takes time.

Any small cavities or imperfections are carefully filled with a hard-wearing compound to create a durable, even surface. The tabletop is then sanded in multiple stages, starting with coarser grits and gradually refining the surface until it’s smooth and ready for finishing.

This stage is labour-intensive, but it’s what gives the finished table its refined feel.

Finishing the Top

The finish plays a big role in how the table looks and how it performs over time.

We use a highly durable, water-based varnish that provides strong protection while keeping the surface looking natural. Multiple coats are applied, with light sanding between each layer to build up an even, long-lasting finish. The underside of the tabletop is also sealed, helping to maintain stability and protect the structure as a whole.

The result is a surface designed to cope with everyday use without feeling heavy or overworked.

Constructing the Frame

The frame provides the structure that supports the tabletop and defines the overall design.

We build our frames from quality redwood, chosen for its strength and reliability. Each frame is assembled using a combination of traditional fixings and reinforcement where needed, ensuring long-term stability without unnecessary bulk.

As with the tabletop, the frame is carefully filled and sanded to achieve a clean, consistent finish before painting begins.

Painting the Frame

Frame colour is one of the most personal parts of a bespoke table.

Frames are painted in colours chosen to suit the room the table will live in, whether that means subtle neutrals or deeper, more expressive tones. The frame is primed where required, then sprayed with multiple coats of paint, with light sanding between layers to achieve an even, durable finish.

If a finish doesn’t meet our standards, additional work is done until it does.

Assembly, Final Checks and Delivery

Once both the tabletop and frame are complete, the table is assembled and checked carefully. Only when everything feels right — visually and structurally — is the table prepared for delivery.

Each piece is built with time, care and attention, ready to become part of daily life in the home it’s been made for.

How Our Designs Work

Each of our table designs is defined by its leg style. Once the legs are chosen, the size, shape, tabletop material and finish are all made to order. This approach allows a table to be tailored to a space without changing the overall character of the design.

The aim is always the same: a table that feels considered, balanced and genuinely at home in its surroundings.

Thinking About a Bespoke Table

Choosing a bespoke dining table isn’t about creating something extravagant. It’s about getting the proportions right, choosing materials that suit how you live, and ending up with a piece that works quietly and confidently in your space.
